I worked at Allen-Bradley (now Rockwell Automation) for 13 years and studied under the masters of leadership. The founder, Harry Bradley was legendary for his forward thinking leadership practices. Moreover, he instilled his leadership philosophy in the very fabric of the company.

He lived on the top floor of corporate headquarters in Milwaukee and would often walk around the factory during the third shift. However, he was not checking to see if people were working. He was checking to see if they were being treated right. If he found out they were not, heads would roll. In addition, he did not care if the rolled heads were “superstars” or not. Allen-Bradley taught its leaders that it did not matter if you were a superstar. What mattered was how you treated your people. If you did not treat people right, you were history.

The superstars in a company often do not play by the rules. They do whatever they want and treat other people any way they want because they think the organization cannot do without them.
